Elephant Pump
Elephant pump (Figures 11 and 12) is a rope pump designed by Pump Aid. It can be used for wells of depths of up to 30m. Its design is simple and communities are able to maintain the pumps after short training. The pump components are built in local workshops and using local workforce, but it appears that the communities that are supposed to use Elephant pumps are not sufficiently involved in the construction phase of the project, and thus do not develop sufficient sense of ownership. Moreover, Pump Aid marks the pumps with a logo of a donor, which creates a belief among villagers, that it is the donor who should take care of the pump.
