Thesis Programme
This project started on 23rd of September 2011 and will be completed by 25th of May 2012.
The project will include:
- appraisal of installation costs of the Nafe pump and Abakus pump through looking at
records of previous project using these pumps and similar pump designs
- investigation of different well construction techniques used in previous water supply
projects
- assessment of availability of pump building materials in rural areas through a
question and answer session with Water Works and creating a rating system
for individual components of the pumps
- evaluation of simplicity of the pump mechanism and construction process during the
construction of the prototypes
- observation of durability of the pumps during the testing phase of the project
- examination of ease of useof the pumps during the testing of the prototypes
- measuring the capacity of the pumps at the testing stage of the project
- survey of aesthetic appeal of the pumps
- analysis of maintenance cost of the pumps through reviewing of how often parts had
to be replaced in previous projects
- estimate of life span of the pumps through determining the time it takes for the major
components of the pumps to fail
- investigation of ways of implementing the water supply projects in rural communities
through literature review.
The Nafe Pump and the Abakus pump will be built, tested, altered and compared to achieve these objectives.
